Easter Bonnets for my girls!!!

The Easter Bonnet parade is always a fun time to get creative with my children!! Lilly doesn't look happy in her photo here as its about to fall off, it was the end of a long day of a long school term and here i was making her stay there for photo's!!! Ah the joys.....however it DID win Runner up in the "Most Creative" section hehehe. It was made by using a balloon and paper mache, lots of paint.....lots of paint, hadn't done paper mache in 35 years, i reckon!!!

Rhiannon's hat was a lot easier, but just as pretty. It was made with black cardboard, lots of gems to glue on and felt rabbit shapes.

Felix Felicis Necklace

I made this for a swap at the Harry Potter crafts group, its a miniature bottle of the ultimate good luck potion, Felix Felicis!! Its made using Swarovski crystals and the spiral rope stitch.
I also made a mobile phone charm with "Grow-Your-Own-Wart" potion in a miniature bottle.

Beaded Thistles

These cute thistles are beaded over a wooden bead using a netted stitch. The tops are stitched using a very easy fun "rolled" flower. This design is by Diane Fitzgerald, i bought this kit about 6 years ago, and finally made it up during the past week. I bought a new vase to display them in....it gorgeous Royal Doulton!!!

I have created this piece for a challenge, thropugh one of the beading groups i belong to, Beaddreamz@yahoogroups.com The theme for this challenge is Ocean Adventures. I love the beach, the ocean, the sand the coast, mermaids, fish and coral and everything about it!! It was too tempting not to do a piece! The focal bead is from Earthworks Glass on ebay. They make beautiful glass beads, vessels and paperweights.

The base for this piece is done in 4 bead tubular herringbone stitch. I then added the focal using a small spiral rope piece, as the bead had a "loop" rather than a "hole". From there i added loads of branched fringing and added pearls, swarovski bicones and my own little 3D jellyfish. I made these by making 3 heart shapes in brick stitch with the base row being 5 beads wide. I then sewed these together with the points meeting at the top. I then added fringing where you go back through the strand and skip every secong or third bead to make it crunch up like tentacles. There are also 3 swarovski star fish which i loved and was so glad to find a use for them here.

The clasp is based on instuctions from Laura McCabe's Crystal book.

I love doing stumpwork embroidery. Here is a pattern i created and mounted into a lid of a pot. You could also make it up into a card or a small picture.

You will need,
Calico x2 20cm x 20cm
Main Fabric 20cm x 20cm
Starnded cotton either DMC or Anchor i mixed mine up using a bit of both 666 dmc is a good bright red, but geraniums are many shedas of pink too.
2 shades of green stranded cotton
Florist wire 28 guage
embroidery needle and large chenille needle
Here is the basic outline of the design. You will need to print it out and then trace it using a black pen onto tracing paper, then using a light box or sunlit window trace it onto your choice of fabric in pencil, a soft 2B is good. For the fabric i used white satin which i backed onto calico, as with most stumpwork you need to back your fabric as it needs that extra support. This is mounted in a small hoop and screwed in tight, it needs to be drum tight.
Once your design is traced onto it you then stitch the stems in STEM STITCH. I then outlined the leaf in SPLIT STITCH. I used a nice bright fresh green green :) and a darker green for the raised stems, play around with the threads you have on hand. The leaf was then stitched in CHAIN stitch going round and round working from the outside in. Keep these stitches small.
For the flowers, i did 6 detatched patals and 6 surface petals, i picked one from my garden and used it to copy. For the detatched petals, mount a piece of calico in a small hoop. Take a piece of florist wire and following the petals picture stitch the wire onto the calico, and then cover the wire using BLANKET stitch. To fill in the petal i used LONG and SHORT stitch. Make as many as you want then carefully cut them out as close to the wire as you can. Really sharp scissors are good :) Keeping the tails at the base of the petal to attach them to the main piece.
Stitch the surface petals, outline them first in SPLIT stitch and fill them in LONG and SHORT stitch. Stitch buds in SATIN stitch. Attach petals to the piece with chenille needle making a hole and pushing the wire ends through, stitch these down at the back. Postion them to sit nicely by moving the wires around before securing.

I have created this piece using glass eyeballs made during WW2 complete with veins! It also featues a porcelin skull bead made by Joan Miller, swarovski crystal riviolis, swarovski crystal bicones and delica seed beads. I bezeled around the eyeballs and riviolis first and then i made the neckstrap using spiral rope stitch adding the eyes and riviolis to the strap and finishing with branged fringing and a button loop closure.

Tea For Two Set

I whipped these up quickly this afternoon, as i wanted to "make" something and finish it in a flash....as i feel i have not achieved anything in my crafty adventures of late...too much of real life annoying me! I bought this lampworked set years ago back in 2004. It was the lampwork artist's first attempt at sculptural beads and its a really cute set. At the time i was a big tea drinker, after being pregnant for three times....now i am back to my terrible ways of waaaaay too much coffee and no tea. Well this little cutie will be a reminder to me of those tea sipping days and my Mum who is a tea drinker through and through!

This set comprises of a brooch and 2 sets of earrings.

This is a cross stitch project i started WAAAAAAY back in 1995. My Mum saw it and asked if i would do it for her. This was the time before children (BC) and i jumped at the chance!! I worked solidly on it, and grew tired of it so i started several other projects and also discovered my love for beading :) Then my life really changed direction and I had my children!!!!! It was consquently put away for nearly 9 years and only 6 weeks ago i pulled it out of hiding and decided to finish it for Mum as we went through a huge loss in the family of my eldest brother Ricky.

Here it is framed and ready to be sent to Mum. All the motifs have significant meanings,

The Border= North-Black, South-Red, East-White, West-Orange

Moon= Full Moon-light of the Great Spirit

Sun= Universal Spirit, Heart of the Sky

Feathered Sun= Combined symbols of sun and eagle and it depicts the universe. White feathers represent man, brown feathers represent woman.

Eagle= Universal spirit, revelation, a mediator between sky and earth.

Gorget= Leather pendant painted with Thunderbird, symbolism as for Eagle.

Elk= Supernatural power, whirlwind.

Bear= Supernatural power, strength, fortitude, whirlwind.

Mountains to the Ocean

This is a piece which I was asked to bead for the Maitland Embroiderers Exhibition in 2006. It was a feature piece and i designed it myself, using inspiration from the theme of the exhibition, Mountains to the Ocean.

The necklace begins with the White Cockatoo's of the bush and ends in the middle with the corals of the reef. It has Swarovski crystals at the clasp with also has an Opal bead.

Have been very busy with real life issues of late and had to put a few crafty projects on hold. Have finally had a few "finishes" though :) This pendant was for the latest Harry Potter Crafts Challenge. The theme was Expecto Patronus.....i really love patronus's and i chose to do Dumbledore's Pheonix. One of my favourite characters and favourite creatures.....this is a pattern by Dragon. I chose to do it in deep purples and silver. The neck strap is of the same beads used in the pendant and i added 8mm rondelles and it has a fringe with moon faces. Its really cool and is offered for sale at my etsy shop.

Okay, with Easter looming very near, i am thinking of the three bonnets i need to help the children make this weekend...stay tuned...I will post the pics as soon as we have them started/done. There are some really lovely ones on the net to get inspiration....and my son wants to go the "natural" look, using real vegies!!!
I saw a neat way to cover eggs either real or wooden in Japanese origami paper, i might try some of those while the children do their hats. LAUGHS!!!

This is my first attempt at a Fabric Postcard. I loved doing this one. I am crazy about the sand, surf anf mermaids so since its summer here and very hot i would go with this as my first theme :) This was done by following the instructions at another blog Ramblings by Red, I think thats the name.....sorry if its wrong, but her instructions are very easy and lots of fun to read and play with fabric.

I did not show the back as i had already addressed it to my recipient!! And did not want to plaster her name and address all over the www hehehe

Pug Cushion

I cross stitched this cushion for my daughter Lilly, who needs one for Kindergaten this year :) Lilly is totally crazy about Pugs. It is a design by Jill Oxton and she has also done a version of a the brown Pug. Lilly chose the Black design :) I was kind of hoping she would go with the brown, he is sooooo cute. But now in making up the cushion, the black is really quite striking.

I am no sewer and do not own a sewing machine, so it was kind of hard, doing it all in hand sewing.

I bought this beautiful lampwork bead way back in 2006. It is by Sylvie Lansdowne, which I am a huge fan of :) It has taken me this long to get around to beading a "place" for her....I was originally going to do a rather big spiral, but changed my mind to doing a Spiral herringbone. Wearing it for summer i figured a smaller spiral would work better, and I was going to do more "seaweed" but stopped as i really thought it was enough. I can always add more but i tried it on this morning and i was really happy with the way it looked. It has a mermaid clasp too!!

This comes from a Cross Stitch Round Robin I was involved in , which started 2006 and finished in 2007. With Rhiannon's Mermaid party next week i dragged this out on Friday and stitched this gorgeous mermaid quilting fabric ( i have had for years wanting to make a mermaid quilt) around the cross stitched piece, i then glued on some seashells, to hide my dreadful stitching!! I really like it and i am going to find a place for it in the bathroom once the party is over. I will put in the centre of the table at the party, and I am putting a picture of The Little Mermaid laminated placemats around.

Just before Christmas I made these Broom Sticks. There are 2 versions. One is unpainted and very rustic the other is spray painted gold and has finer bristles for the brush section. They were made from all Australian natural ingredients!!! Off the trees down the road! They are inspired by my continuing love of all things witchy, and krafty and Harry.

Whats happening lately...

My daughter Rhiannon is having a Mermaid Birthday party in 2 weeks, so me being me, cannot just hold a birthday party. I must make it crafty and crazy. It is in the theme of Ariel from the Walt Disney characters, I made invitations for all her classmates, as a "Message in a Bottle" they were a real hit!! I used recycled "pop top" bottles and spray painted the lids gold. The invitations were done on teas stained paper with the edges burnt a little, and rolled them up and tied with a ribbon. On the outside i stuck 2 big stickers which i wrote on with the embossing pens, putting the recipient's name etc.

I am now in full speed ahead to make some fish, shells, and other decorations as well as costumes for my other 2 children. Matthew wants to go as King Triton and Lilly wants to go as Eric's Dog!! hehehe

I am itching to get back into some more ploymer clay, but it may have to wait until i finish crafting for this party. And I am also cross stitching a Pug for Lilly to make her a cushion for her first year at school.They have a little nap each day :)

I'll post a pic of my first attemjpt at a SPRITE, she is not so good, i have a looong way to go......but i am so keen to do more figures in clay.

Today i joined the Creative Everyday Challenge, i figure with all that i do, i am creative sooooo much each day i am surely a contibutor to these things!!!!

First attempt at Polymer Clay!!

I have wanted to try Polymer Clay for so long now, I bought 3 books a a bit of Premo and I finally sat down and made my first piece last Thursday, I was kinda happy with how Wendyll turned out. He is a Dragon from the book by Christie Friesen. I then made Lilly a mouse as requested as she is home with me watching me and all my creations, I made him up myself, he is cute too. I then made a second dragon on Friday, he is called Tobias. It has given me loads of courage and inspiration to go onto bigger and more elaborate sculptures.....more clay pieces to follow...I want to make a faerie next.

I made these two for my Mum, a glasses strap done in Spiral Rope stitch and another spiral stitch. Both are really simple stitches to do and make great quick gifts, oh and I added swarovski crystals every now and then to the glasses strap. You may have guessed my mum loves purples/mauves/pinks!!!!

Cat Brooch. A Quirky Gift for a Friend!!

I was inspired by a recent challenge on the Harry Potter Crafts group I belong to, to make this brooch for a friend who adores cats :) The challenge was to make a craft piece about a character you hate from the stories/movies. I was fascinated by the cat brooch and ring that Professore Umbridge wore in the Order of the Pheonix movie. I recreated these for the challenge. Unhappy with the fact that mine were "flat" i embarked on a crafting journey to make my own "cabochon" type setting. I have done it here with plaster of paris, then covered it with the picture and then painted it with several coats of nail polish, then I beaded around it and embellished it with pearls.

I have included here pictures of the brooch and ring set and the "cabochon brooch".

Harry Potter Wall Hanging

Spiral Bangle

I tried this wonderful pattern about 5 years ago and I used Silamide thread, which I really like using. It called for the thread to be doubled, but I find it so annoying so I didn't....big mistake, the bangle kept breaking the thread as I made it and eventually it all fell apart!!! In a shopping centre with beads flying everywhere!!!

I wanted to give it another go with a nicer blue bead colour too, so i started another using Fireline. It has worked wonderfully and I did not have to double it :)

Hi!!

Here is the latest in the wool blankets i have made. It is another Jenny McWhinney design and its really cute. It was fairly quick to embroider too. A good friend of mine has asked me to make a wool embroidered blanket for her sister's 70th birthday. It is a very extensive pattern with birds in their nest in each of the corners. I am looking forward to this challenge and i have 2 years to complete it :)

Inspired by the Harry Potter books, i have created some fun potion bottles to wear. Featuring an authentic looking label on tiny weeny bottles filled with magical fun. Potions and their colours in brackets, included are........
AMORTENTIA- the most powerful love potion in the world (mother of pearl)
CALMING DRAUGHT- calms emotional turmoil (blue)
ELIXIR OF LIFE- extends life if drank all the time (silvery blue)
FELIX FELICIUS-ultimate luck potion (molten gold)
INVIGORATION DRAUGHT- invigorates user (gold)
ELIXIR TO INDUCE EUPHORIA- induces euphoria (sunshine yellow)
STRENGTHENING SOLUTION- gives strength (salamander red)
DR. UBBLY'S OBLIVIOUS UNCTION- used to heal scarring left by thoughts (yellow)
DRAUGHT OF PEACE- calms and soothes agitation (white)

Global Warming Doll bead-a-long

I have just completed my doll for a bead-a-long that i participated in. It was in a yahoo group. My inspiration for the doll came from the ice that is melting in the icy regions of the world. I beaded an Ice Maiden, based on the fairytale, The Snow Queen with the thought that we should not let our ice regions of the world become just a fairytale.

Here are some beaded projects.

Above left is a bracelet made with runes done in square stitch. I can customise your runes for you, to your current needs, this bracelet was made for my dad while he was being treated for prostate cancer, it has the strength and protection runes. On the right is a PMC Dragon done by Valerie, i then did a herringbone neck strap in delicas.

Bead Tapestries.

Finally finished number 2 bead birth sampler. I did one 4 years ago for my first born daughter and now have completed one for second born daughter :)
There are over 22 000 beads in each tapestry and each one took about 4 years to complete, i did not work on them all the time, doing many many small projects in between. These tapestries were designed by Theresa at Ty Wolfe designs.

Banksia Earrings. Native Australian Flora Collection.

The first of my Native Australian Flora Collection. It is the Banksia, a beautiful tree native to Australia. It has a unique flower and also comes in red. This pair features a golden colour with lovely shades of green for the leaves which branch out at the base of the flower. These trees are found here in my suburb of Thornlie and grow magnificently. The pods that release the seeds are also fascinating, like little faces peeping out at you :)
The finding is a gold plated hook. These earrings are for sale for $15 and for International buyers there is postage of $8. A total of $23 AU. If you are in Australia the postage is $5, making a total of $20 AU. Please do not hesitate to post here if you have any questions.

Dalmatian Sweater

Here is a quick and easy embroidery project I did last week for my daughter who is turning 4 very soon. She loves puppies and dogs, especially dalmatians :) This pattern featured in an Inspirations magazine and is originally done for a winter dress and there are two more little dog designs that go on the yoke, this one i have done is featured on the back of the dress. Lilly really took a shine to these dogs in particular and i did them on a scivvy as we call it here in Australia, a good friend in the US informs me you call them Turtle neck sweaters :)
Because there is much more "give"in the fabric of the sweater it was very hard to transfer the design, so i ended up doing it mostly in freehand.
